Elektromagnetische straling van hoogspanningslijnen, wi-fi, telefoonmasten en zenders vormt een "geloofwaardige" bedreiging voor in het wild levende dieren, zoals in een nieuw rapport wordt gesuggereerd, aangezien milieuactivisten waarschuwden dat de invoering van 5G meer schade zou kunnen aanrichten.

Uit een analyse van 97 studies van de door de EU gefinancierde evaluatie-instantie EKLIPSE is gebleken dat straling een potentieel risico vormt voor de oriëntatie van insecten en vogels en de gezondheid van planten.

(Natural News) You don’t have to be a geologist to understand that an earthquake in the vicinity of a volcano could be a disaster waiting to happen, but what if there were nearly 900 quakes near a supervolcano?

That is the situation that is playing out right now in Yellowstone National Park, where 878 earthquakes have struck since June 12. Most of the quakes had a very low magnitude, but the strongest one, which was recorded on June 15, had a magnitude of 4.4. The park rests atop one of the most dangerous supervolcanoes on the planet, prompting fears that it could be about to blow. Any doubts about its active state can be dispelled by the sight of Old Faithful, shooting water up every few hours.

Sitting adjacent to Biscayne National Park, the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station has been leaking radioactive materials into protected waters, according to a new study. Performed by Dr. David Chin from the University of Miami, the results released Tuesday morning by Miami-Dade County found high levels of a radioactive isotope in Biscayne Bay.
Those radioactive waters are coming from the power plant's cooling canals, raising radioactivity levels 215 times higher than normally found in seawater, the report added. "This is one of several things we were very worried about," South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard told the Miami New Times. "You would have to work hard to find a worse place to put a nuclear plant, right between two national parks and subject to hurricanes and storm surge."

First solar powered airport in South Africa opens

The first solar powered airport in  South Africa has officially been opened making it a first of its kind in Africa.

Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa congratulated the Department of Transport as it is one of the key departments paving way for South Africa’s Green Economy Strategy.

Majority of the airport’s energy needs will be supplied through 200 square meters of photo-voltaic (PV) panels. PV technology generates electricity from solar radiation providing a renewable and clean energy source.
The first phase will involve generation of 750kw through this clean energy source sufficient to meet the airport’s daily needs. This is however expected to increase with plant capacity in future.

Groene kas in de sneeuw functioneert op aardwarmte

Een groene kas in de Amerikaanse staat Nebraska gebruikt aardwarmte om citrusvruchten te verbouwen. Dat meldt NPR. Volgens eigenaar Russ Finch stelt zijn zogeheten Greenhouse in the Snow hem in staat om iedere tropische vrucht te verbouwen. De groene kas heeft een schuin dak dat volledig op het zuiden is gericht. Wanneer de zon onvoldoende warmte geeft, schakelt de kas op geothermische energie over. Hierdoor kan de temperatuur in de kas, ook wanneer het buiten sneeuwt, boven de 28 graden worden gehouden, zonder dat hiervoor fossiele brandstoffen noodzakelijk zijn.

Westland testcase voor elektriciteit uit diepe aardwarmte

Binnen het project Trias Westland boren de energiebedrijven Westland Infra en HVC samen met veilingbedrijf Flora Holland vier kilometer diep de bodem in op zoek naar water van 150 graden Celsius.

Volgens Marco van Soerland, directeur van Trias Westland, is de diepe boring nodig omdat met ‘ondiepe’ aardwarmte slechts een vijfde van warmtebehoefte van het Westland te dekken is.

Met de hetere aardwarmte van het Trias erbij kun je de resterende 80 procent ook aankoppelen”, zegt Soerland tegen Energiepodium.nl. In de zomer van 2017 zal het project de eerste warmte leveren.

De initiatiefnemers Westland Infra, HVC en Flora Holland verkleinen de risico’s van de boring tot de voor Nederland onbekende diepte met de combinatie met een conventioneel,

Eerste Kleine Wildernis van Nederland in Darwinpark

In het Zaandamse Darwinpark komt de eersteKleine Wildernis van Nederland. In november wordt dit bos aangeplant volgens de methode van de Indiase bos-guru Shubhendu Sharma.

Na twee  jaar moet het bos zelfvoorzienend worden, en na tien jaar lijkt het al op een 100 jaar oud oerbos. Deze bossen zijn honderd keer biodiverser dan traditioneel aangeplante bossen. Een klein bos heb je al voor de prijs van een iPhone volgens de organisatoren.
